July 26, 2007 CHESTERTOWN, MD - Three-time Grand Slam Champion and former world #1 in doubles Ellis Ferreira was recently named the senior assistant men's and women's tennis coach at Washington College, while Washington College Hall of Famer Dave Marshall ('88) has been named the head men's and women's tennis coach. Both appointments were announced by Bryan Matthews, Washington College's Athletic Director.
Ferreira won the 2000 Australian Open Men's Doubles Championship with Rick Leach and the 2001 Australian Open Mixed Doubles Championship with Corina Morariu. He also advanced to the finals of the 2000 US Open Men's Doubles Championship with Leach, won the 2001 World Doubles Championships in India, and won the 2005 Wimbledon Over 35 Doubles Championship with Paul Haarhuis. Ferreira brings a wealth of tennis knowledge to Washington College. In addition to his three grand slam titles, he also won 18 events and advanced to 35 tournament finals over a 15-year professional career. He has posted victories over numerous top professionals, including Andre Agassi and Boris Becker. A Davis Cup stalwart for South Africa, he also competed for his home country in the 1996 Summer Olympics. He was a member of the New York Sportimes of World Team Tennis in 1993 and won the 2004 World Team Tennis Championship with the Newport Beach Breakers. Ferreira's ties to collegiate tennis date back to his days at the University of Alabama, where he was a three-time All-American. Since 2004, he has been the Chief Executive Officer of Ferreira Tennis, a children's clothing company.
Marshall, a two-time conference champion during his collegiate tennis career at Washington College, was the first in a long line of nationally-ranked tennis players at Washington College and was the first WC player to record 100 singles and 100 doubles wins. In his post-collegiate playing career, Marshall has earned the USTA Delaware Pro of the Year award and won numerous USTA Delaware State Championships and USTA Middle States Championships. He is also a USTA National Champion. The president of Dave Marshall and Associates, Marshall manages operations at 15 tennis clubs and has established Sea Colony Resort in Bethany Beach, DE, as one of Tennis Magazine's Top 50 Resorts and one of Tennis Resort Online's Top 15 Resorts. His guidance and teaching at Sea Colony has helped develop 105 state championship tennis players, 75 sectional champions, 25 USTA National Champions, and two US Open Qualifiers. He has sent 125 players on to play collegiate tennis. In addition to his B.S. in History from Washington College, Marshall holds an M.S.M. in Human Resources and a Doctorate in Educational Innovation and Leadership, both from Wilmington (DE) College. Marshall takes over the men's and women's tennis head coaching position from Constantine Ananiadis, who left after four seasons to become the head women's tennis coach at Oberlin College. Marshall and Ferreira will be announcing new men's and women's assistant coaches as well. Former assistant men's tennis coach Mike Duquette became Washington College's Director of Recreation in June, while former women's assistant tennis coach Conor Smith is the new head men's and women's tennis coach at Bridgewater College. The Washington College men's tennis team has advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament 19 times in the past 22 years, winning the NCAA Division III National Team Championship in 1994 and again in 1997. The Shoremen have also claimed three NCAA Division III National Singles Championships and have garnered All-American honors 42 times. Since 1985, the Shoremen have won 78% of their dual matches (387-109) and have won 20 team conference championships. The Washington College women's tennis team has two conference team championships to its credit, winning the Middle Atlantic Conference Championship in 1991 and sharing the Centennial Conference Championship in 2002. The Shorewomen have garnered All-American honors 13 times. The Shorewomen have won at least 10 matches in four of the past six seasons. |
