Shoremen Prevail Against Garnet, 6-3
Laux Clinches Match with Win at No. 3 Singles

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Freshman Andrew Laux (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai) clinched the match with a win at No. 3 singles as host Washington College topped visiting Swarthmore College, 6-3, in a Centennial Conference men's tennis match this afternoon inside the Johnson Lifetime Fitness Center. The Shoremen, who are ranked 18th in the Atlantic South region and are off to their best start since opening the 2001 season 13-0, improved to 11-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play with the win. The Garnet, ranked 12th in the region, fell to 3-7 and 3-1.

The two teams split the first two doubles matches to finish as Swarthmore's Jonathan Lo and Kevin Shaughnessy defeated WC junior Todd Green (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) and Laux, 8-2, at No. 1, but WC junior Michal Switala (Redlo, Poland/Gunston Day School, MD) and freshman Jon Keller (Frederick, MD/Frederick) defeated Mark Wee and Justin deFeliciantonio, 8-2, at No. 3. Freshman Adam Cranford (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) and junior Brian Danver (Bethany Beach, DE/St. Albans, DC) gave the Shoremen a 2-1 lead in the match by winning the final three games at No. 2 to come away with an 8-6 victory.

Cranford gave the Shoremen a 3-1 lead with a 6-0, 6-2, win over Lo, the region's 24th-ranked singles player, at No. 1. Shaughnessy pulled the Garnet to within one point with a 3-6, 6-3, 10-2, win over Switala at No. 2, but Green pulled out a 6-0, 2-6, 10-7, win at No. 4 to put Washington one point away from clinching the match. Laux then finished off Wee, 6-2, 3-6, 10-7, to give the Shoremen the victory. Danver added a 6-3, 6-2, win over Greenberg at No. 5 and deFeliciantonio beat Keller, 6-4, 2-0 (ret.), at No. 6 to complete the scoring.

The Shoremen return to action Tuesday with a 4:00 p.m. match at 10th-ranked Mary Washington.
