2008 LANCASTER, PA -- The Washington College men's tennis team, ranked 18th in the Atlantic South region, clinched a spot in the Centennial Conference Playoffs with a pair of conference road wins on Sunday. The Shoremen (12-1, 5-1 Centennial) opened the day with an 8-1 win at Muhlenberg in Allentown, PA, and then traveled 90 minutes to Lancaster to defeat Franklin & Marshall, 7-2, in the afternoon. In the morning match in Allentown, the Shoremen got off to a quick start with three doubles wins against Muhlenberg. Sophomores Derek Wise (Salisbury, MD/Parkside) and Timothy Parks (Geneva, Switzerland/College du Leman) beat Brian Wernick and Jonathan Farber, 8-4, at No. 1, while freshman Adam Cranford (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) and junior Brian Danver (Bethany Beach, DE/St. Albans, DC) beat Mark Apostolos and Matt Kral, 8-1, at No. 2. Juniors Michal Switala (Redlo, Poland/Gunston Day School, MD) and Todd Green (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) added an 8-3 victory against Jamie Goldman and Wayne Mitchel at No. 3. Green opened singles with a 6-1, 6-1, win against Wernick at No. 3, while Switala followed with a 6-0, 6-3, win against Apostolos at No. 5. Danver downed Farber, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4 and Cranford bested Dan Zakheim, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 2. Muhlenberg got on the board when Robbie Goldwein posted a 7-5, 6-1, triumph over Parks at No. 1. WC freshman Andrew Laux (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai) won at No. 6, beating Mitchel, 6-0, 7-6. The Shoremen also swept doubles against F&M. Green and Laux beat Armen Vartan and Brett Joseph, 8-5, at No. 1, Danver and Cranford bested Josh Calo and Paul Salierno at No. 2, and Switala and freshman Jon Keller (Frederick, MD/Frederick) downed Matthew Barker and Jesus Heath, 8-1, at No. 3. Washington won four singles matches against the Diplomats. Cranford beat Vartan, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 1, Laux topped Joseph, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5, at No. 3, Green defeated Calo, 6-0, 6-2, and Danver blanked William McGuiness, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5. Franklin & Marshall won at No. 2, where Barker was a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, winner against Switala, and at No. 6, where Salierno defeated Parks, 8-5, at No. 6. The Shoremen return to action Tuesday with a 3:30 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against Ursinus. |
