2008 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Host Washington College swept visiting Goucher College, 9-0, in a non-conference men's tennis match today inside the Johnson Lifetime Fitness Center. The Shoremen improved to 2-0 with the win, while the Gophers fell to 0-1 with the loss. Washington cruised to three wins in doubles to take a 3-0 lead in the match. Freshman Andrew Laux (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai) and junior Todd Green (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) were 8-2 winners over Chris Covey and Michael Brooks at No. 1. Freshman Adam Cranford (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) and junior Brian Danver (Bethany Beach, DE/St. Albans, DC) breezed past Steve Baum and Andrew Gerst, 8-1, at No. 2, and freshman Jon Keller (Frederick, MD/Frederick) and junior Michal Switala (Redlo, Poland/Gunston Day School, MD) bested Doug Mangi and Michael Simon, 8-1, at No. 3. Green scored the Shoremen's first singles win, beating Simon, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4. Cranford then clinched the match victory for Washington with a 6-0, 6-0, sweep of Gerst at No. 3. Danver added a 6-0, 6-1, win against Brooks at No. 2, while Switala bested Covey, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 1. Laux and Keller completed the sweep with wins at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. Laux was a 6-0, 6-1, winner over Baum at No. 5, while Keller beat Billie Weiss, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6. The Shoremen return to action tomorrow with a 9:00 a.m. home match against Bridgewater. |
