22, 2008 LEWES, DE -- The Washington College men's tennis team opened its 2008 dual-match season with a 5-4 win over Division I Delaware State Friday evening in Lewes, DE. The victory over the Hornets (0-2) came in the dual-match head coaching debut of Dr. Dave Marshall ('88) and is the Shoremen's first win over a Division I opponent since a 7-0 blanking of Central Connecticut State during the 2001 season. The Shoremen captured four of the six singles matches and won one doubles match against the Hornets. All three Washington freshmen in the singles line-up posted victories as Adam Cranford (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) beat Milos Velickovic, 5-7, 6-4, 10-8, at No. 3, Andrew Laux (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai) was a 6-4, 6-1, winner over Tyler Wyatt at No. 5, and Jon Keller (Frederick, MD/Frederick) posted a 6-1, 6-3, victory over Michael Siembida at No. 6. Junior Brian Danver (Montgomery Village, MD/St. Albans) supplied the Shoremen's other singles victory with a 2-6, 7-5, 10-8, win against Brian Gelis at No. 2. Washington's doubles win came at No. 3 where Keller teamed with junior Michal Switala (Redlo, Poland/Gunston Day School, MD) to best Siembida and Wyatt, 8-4. Cranford and Danver nearly added a second doubles win for Washington, falling to Gelis and Velickovic, 9-8(8) at No. 2. The Shoremen return to action March 1st with a 9:00 a.m. home match against Goucher. |
