2008 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Host Washington College improved to 3-0 on the season with a 7-2 non-conference men's tenis over Bridgewater today inside the Johnson Lifetime Fitness Center. The Shoremen are off to their best start since the 2004 season, when they opened 8-0. The Eagles slipped to 1-1 on the year with the loss. The Shoremen rolled to wins at the bottom two spots of doubles to take a 2-0 lead. Junior Michal Switala (Redlo, Poland/Gunston Day School, MD) and freshman Jon Keller (Frederick, MD/Frederick) posted an 8-0 win over Andrew Thornton and Brad DeWitt at No. 3, while freshman Adam Cranford (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) and junior Brian Danver (Bethany Beach, DE/St. Albans, DC) bested Colin Saunders and Chris Radke, 8-2, at No. 2. The Eagles then got on the board when Brian Remsch and Ryan Radke outlasted junior Todd Green (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) and freshman Andrew Laux (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai), 8-6, in a back-and-forth match at No. 1 doubles. The two teams combined to break serve five times in the match with Remsch and Radke breaking serve three times and Green and Laux breaking serve twice. Switala gave Washington a 3-1 lead by completing a 6-3, 6-1, win over Chris Radke at No. 3 singles. Green quickly upped the advantage to 4-1 minutes later by finishing a 6-2, 6-1, win at No. 4 singles. Cranford clinched the win for the Shoremen with a 6-4, 6-1, victory against Remsch at No. 1. Danver added a 6-2, 7-5, victory against Ryan Radke at No 2, while Laux defeated Teddy Callow, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5. Saunders accounted for the Eagles' second point of the match by wrapping the day up with a 6-1, win against sophomore Derek Wise (Salisbury, MD/Parkside) at No. 6. The Shoremen return to action one week from today with an 11:00 a.m. match at Division I Maryland-Eastern Shore. |
