Shoremen Pick Up Two Wins
Washington Bests Methodist, Goucher

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College men's tennis team improved to 2-1 on the season with a pair of non-conference regional victories today at the Lifetime Fitness Center. The Shoremen, ranked 11th in the Atlantic South region, opened the day with a 6-3 win over Methodist. Washington then bested Goucher in the afternoon by a 9-0 final.

Against Methodist, Washington took a 2-1 lead after doubles. Senior Arturo Solis (Guatemala, Guatemala/Valle Verde School) and sophomore Rafael Roldan (Quito, Ecuador/Academia Cotopaxi), the region's eighth-ranked doubles tandem, defeated Chris Fletcher and Andrew Fletcher, 8-4, at No. 1, while sophomore Brian Danver (Montgomery Village, MD/St. Albans) and sophomore Todd Green (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) were 8-4 winners over Dave Hardy and Andrew Freeman at No. 2. At No. 3, Methodist's Mike Layton and Matt Siegal scored an 8-3 win over Washington freshman Timothy Parks (Geneva, Switzerland/College du Leman) and sophomore Michal Switala (Redlo, Poland/Gunston Day School, MD).

In singles against Methodist, Solis, ranked 17th in singles in the region, was a 6-3, 6-4, winner over Chris Fletcher at No. 1, while Roldan rolled past Layton, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2 and Danver was a 7-6(2), 6-4, winner over Hardy at No. 3. Methodist picked up wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles as Freeman topped Green, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 4 and Louis Cisti bested Parks, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 5. Switala captured the Shoremen's sixth point of the match with a 6-4, 3-6, 10-5 victory over Seigal at No. 6.

Against Goucher, Solis and Roldan and Green and Danver won by identical 8-4 scores at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, respectively. Wynn Thane and Andrew Ortiz played No. 1 for the Gophers, while Chris Covey and Michael Brooks played No. 2. At No. 3, Switala and freshman Derek Wise (Salisbury, MD/Parkside) were 8-2 winners over Mike Simon and Matt Frankl.

In singles against Goucher, Solis bested Ortiz, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 1, Roldan blanked Thane, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2, and Danver beat Covey, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 3. Parks was a 6-4, 6-1 winner of Brooks at No. 4, Switala downed Simon, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5, and Wise defeated Frankl, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 6.

With his two singles wins and two doubles wins today, Roldan improved to 13-0 in singles and 13-0 in doubles in home matches for his collegiate career.

The Shoremen return to action March 11th with a pair of matches at Washington and Lee. Washington will play Denison, ranked 17th nationally, at 9:30 a.m. and Washington and Lee, ranked 20th nationally, at 2:30 p.m.
