WC's Solis & Roldan Reach Doubles
Semifinals at ITA Southeast Regionals

SALISBURY, MD -- Washington College senior Arturo Solis (Guatemala, Guatemala/Valle Verde School) and sophomore Rafael Roldan (Quito, Ecuador/Academia Cotopaxi) reached the doubles semifinals at the ITA Men's Southeast Regionals this weekend at Salisbury University.

Solis and Roldan, the second seed in main draw doubles, bested Mary Washington's Zach Detweiler and Evan Goff, 8-3. Solis and Roldan then topped Andrew Clearfield and Ryan Laws of Carnegie Mellon, 8-4. In the quarterfinals, Solis and Roldan bested eighth-seeded Eric Caudill and Jeff Zenisek of Virginia Wesleyan, 8-6. Solis and Roldan fell to Alex Buxbaum and Thomas Kinrade of Haverford, 8-6, in the semifinals.

Sophomore Todd Green (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) and sophomore Michal Switala (Redlo, Poland/Gunston Day School, MD) lost their first round match in main draw doubles, but then defeated Goucher's Sam Barton and Chris Covey, 8-3, in the first consolation round. In the consolation quarterfinals, Green and Switala trumped Ryo Kawai and Jose Ortiz of Guilford, 8-6. In the consolation semifinals, Green and Switala fell to Govinda Avasarala and Jon Pollak of Mary Washington, 8-3.

Solis, seeded first in singles, began singles play with a 6-1, 6-0, win over Villa Julie's Jason Cohen in the first round of the main draw. Solis then topped John Mook of Christopher Newport, 6-4, 6-2, in the second round. In the third round, Solis fell to ninth-seeded David Maldow of Johns Hopkins, 6-4, 7-5.

Roldan and Green each lost their first round matches in main draw singles to seeded players. Roldan then bested Detweiler, 8-1, in the first consolation round, while Green was eliminated in the first consolation round. In the second consolation round, Roldan fell to Carnegie Mellon's Nikola Ljuboja, 8-3.

In B draw singles, freshman Derek Wise (Salisbury, MD/Parkside) topped Goucher's Mike Simon, 6-4, 6-1, in the first round. Wise then lost to Catholic's Andrew Kracht, 6-2, 6-1, in the second round. Switala bested Catholic's Andrew Malone, 6-4, 6-1, in the first round, but fell to Grove City's Peter Davis in the second round of B draw singles, 4-6, 6-3, 10-5. Freshman Timothy Parks (Geneva, Switzerland/College Du Leman) lost his first round match in B draw singles and then downed Elizabethtown's Zack Atkinson, 8-3, in the first consolation round. In the second consolation round, Parks fell to Muhlenberg's David Weiss, 8-5.

Parks and Wise dropped both of their matches in B draw doubles.

The Washington College men's tennis team returns to action at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Tennis Invitational of Newport News, VA, October 13th-15th.
