Green Posts Win at No. 2 Singles

BALTIMORE, MD -- Host Johns Hopkins University, the 21st-ranked team in Division III and fifth-ranked team in the Atlantic South region, topped visiting Washington College, 8-1, in a Centennial Conference men's tennis match today in Baltimore. The Blue Jays ran their record to 11-2 overall and 5-0 in conference play with the win, while the Shoremen, who are ranked 11th in the Atlantic South, fell to 5-6 and 3-1 with the loss.

David Maldow, the 13th-ranked singles player in Division III, bested Washington sophomore Rafael Roldan (Quito, Ecuador/Academia Cotopaxi), 6-2, 6-4, at No. 1 singles. Joe Vasoontara and Hillen Smith, ranked fourth in the region in doubles, were 8-0 winners over WC sophomores Brian Danver (Montgomery Village, MD/St. Albans) and Todd Green (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) at No. 1 doubles.

Washington's point came at No. 2 singles where Green was a 6-4, retired, winner over Vasoontara.

The loss was just the second Centennial Conference loss ever for Washington, which was without the services of No. 1 singles player senior Arturo Solis (Guatemala, Guatemala/Valle Verde School) due to an injury.

The Shoremen return to action Friday with a 3:30 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against Gettysburg.
