Roldan Reaches "C" Final at Invite
Shoremen Compete at Hampton Roads Invitational

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA -- Sophomore Rafael Roldan (Quito, Ecuador/Academia Cotopaxi) advanced to the final of "C Draw" singles as the Washington College men's tennis team competed at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Tennis Invitational Friday, Saturday, and today, in Virginia Beach, VA.

Roldan topped Enrique Villagomez of Chowan, 6-7(9), 6-2, 10-7, in the first round to advance to the quarterfinals. Roldan then defeated Dave Berry of Richmond, 4-1, retired, in the quarterfinals, and Jeff Zenisek of Virginia Wesleyan, 6-3, 6-4, in the semifinals. The win over Zenisek was Roldan's 20th straight singles win dating back to last season. In the final, Eric Caudill bested Roldan, 6-2, 6-3.

Sophomore Todd Green (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) lost his first round match in "C Draw" singles, but then bounced back to defeat David Weiner of Christopher Newport, 8-3, in the consolation quarterfinals. In the consolation semifinals, Green defeated Dylan Young of Christopher Newport, 6-4, 6-0, before falling to John Mook of Christopher Newport in the consolation final, 8-2.

Sophomore Michal Switala (Redlo, Poland/Gunston Day School, MD) opened play in "D Draw" singles with a 6-4, 7-6(2) win over Devon Crosby of Virginia Wesleyan. Switala then bested Tommy Harris of Christopher Newport, 6-0, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. Switala fell in the semifinals, 6-4, 7-5, to Jimmy Delevante of Queens (NY).

Freshman Derek Wise (Salisbury, MD/Parkside) lost his first round match in "D Draw" singles, but bested Chris Scott of Christopher Newport, 8-1, in his first consolation match to advance to the consolation semifinals. In the consolation semifinals, Wise downed Virginia Wesleyan's, Tommy Popomaronis, 8-6. In the consolation final, Wise fell to Steve Myers, 8-0.

The Washington College men's tennis team will compete at the ITA Southeast Regionals at Salisbury September 30th-October 2nd.
