2007 LEXINGTON, VA -- The Washington College men's tennis team dropped a pair of matches to nationally-ranked opponents today at Washington and Lee University. In their first match of the day, the Shoremen (2-3), ranked 11th in the Atlantic South region, fell to Denison, ranked 17th in Division III and fifth in the Central region, by a final score of 7-2. Washington then lost to Washington and Lee, ranked 20th in Division III and fourth in the Atlantic South, 7-2. Denison swept doubles to take a 3-0 lead over the Shoremen. Randy Lofgren and Kevin Newman, ranked fifth as a tandem in the Central, bested senior Arturo Solis (Guatemala, Guatemala/Valle Verde School) and sophomore Rafael Roldan (Quito, Ecuador/Academia Cotopaxi), the Atlantic South region's eighth-ranked doubles team, 8-3, at No. 1. Solis, ranked 17th in the Atlantic South, bested Lofgren, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 singles to pick up the first Washington point in the match. Jordan Buehler, ranked 21st in the Central, bested Roldan, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 2. The Shoremen's other point against Denison came at No. 4 singles, where sophomore Todd Green (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) topped Tim Hodgkiss-Lilly, 7-6(4), 1-2, retired. Washington's lone doubles win against Washington and Lee came at No. 1 where Solis and Roldan topped Nat Estes and Tim Ross, 8-4. Solis also recorded the Shoremen's singles win against the Generals, defeating Ross, ranked 21st in the Atlantic South, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 1. Estes, ranked 22nd in the Atlantic South, was a 6-4, 6-0, winner over Roldan at No. 2. The Shoremen return to action Tuesday with a 2:00 p.m. match at Christopher Newport. |
