Captains Edge Shoremen, 5-4
Solis, Green, Switala Win Singles Matches

NEWPORT NEWS , VA -- Host Christopher Newport University, the 12th-ranked team in the Atlantic South region, downed visiting Washington College, the 11th-ranked team in the region, 5-4, in a non-conference men's tennis match today in Newport News, VA. The Captains improved to 4-0 with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 2-4 with the loss.

Eddie Glidewell and John Mook, the 10th-ranked doubles tandem in the region, bested Washington sophomores Rafael Roldan (Quito, Ecuador/Academia Cotopaxi) and Brian Danver (Bethany Beach, DE/St. Albans), 8-1, at No. 1 doubles. Senior Arturo Solis (Guatemala, Guatemala/Valle Verde School) and sophomore Todd Green (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) posted a 9-7 win for the Shoremen over John Braig and Steve Myers at No. 2, but a 9-8(3) victory for Dylan Young and David Weiner over Washington freshman Timothy Parks (Geneva, Switzerland/College du Leman) and sophomore Michal Switala (Redlo, Poland/Gunston Day School, MD) at No. 3 gave the Captains a critical 2-1 lead after doubles.

The Shoremen picked up three wins in singles as Solis, ranked 17th in the region, rolled past Mook, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 1, Green topped Young, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 4, and Switala bested Weiner, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 6. Christopher Newport was able to get the win, however, by managing a split in singles. Glidewell, ranked ninth in the region, defeated Roldan, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 2, Braig beat Danver, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3, and Myers downed Parks, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 5.

The Shoremen return to action one week from today with their Centennial Conference opener, a 3:30 p.m. home match against Franklin & Marshall.
