26, 2006 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College men's tennis team defeated Washington & Lee, ranked 11th nationally and third in the Atlantic South, 4-3 on Sunday. The Shoremen are now 6-3 overall this season, while the Generals slipped to 11-7. Junior Arturo Solis (Guatemala, Guatemala/Valle Verde School) and senior Tim Riskie (Woodbury, NJ/Woodbury), ranked fourth in the region in doubles, recorded a 8-5 win over David Shay and Stu Sanford, ranked fifth in the region in doubles, at No. 1. Freshman Anantha Bhaskar (Chennai, India/National Open School) and freshman Rafael Roldan (Quito, Ecuador/Academia Cotopaxi) posted a 9-7 win at No. 3 to give the Shoremen an early 1-0 advantage in the match. Solis, ranked first in the region in singles, defeated Shay, ranked 10th in the region, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 1 to open singles play and gave the Shoremen a 2-0 lead in the match. However, the Generals defeated the Shoremen at #2, #4 and #5 singles, and held a 3-2 lead with two matches to be decided. Roldan lost the first set at #6 singles to Nelson Bunn, but came back to defeat Bunn 7-6 (8-6) and 6-2 to nod the match at 3-3. Bhaskar took the first set at No. 3 over Seth Feibelman, 7-6 (7-4), but dropped the second set, 3-6. Bhaskar upended Feibelman in the third set, 6-2, giving the Shoremen the team victory. "This was a great win for our program, and puts us back on the map on a national level where we belong," remarked Washington College head coach Constantine Ananiadis. "I am very proud of our freshman. They played like seasoned veterans and came through for us in the clutch." The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 3:30 p.m. home match against Centennial Conference opponent Ursinus. |
