18, 2006 FREDERICKSBURG, VA -- Host Mary Washington, the 12th-ranked team in Division III and third ranked team in the Atlantic South region, bested visiting Washington College, the eighth-ranked team in the region, 5-2, in a non-conference men's tennis match this afternoon in Fredericksburg, VA. The Eagles improved to 8-2 with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 3-3 with the loss. Mary Washington took a 1-0 lead by winning two of three doubles matches. The Shoremen's doubles win came at No. 1, where junior Arturo Solis (Guatemala, Guatemala/Valle Verde School) and senior Tim Riskie (Woodbury, NJ/Woodbury), the ninth-ranked doubles team in the region, upended Paul Bristow and Randy Loden, 8-5. Solis, the region's top-ranked singles player, also won at No. 1 singles, defeating Bristow, the region's fifth-ranked singles player, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. Riskie fell to another regionally-ranked singles player, Jon Clair, the region's sixth-ranked player, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 2. Senior Maciek Prytula (Szczecin, Poland/PLO) accounted for Washington's other singles win, besting Loden, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4. Washington played without senior Mike Edison (Darnestown, MD/Good Counsel), who has played at fourth singles and first doubles this spring, due to a family commitment. "Although we're not pleased with the result of this match, we are pleased that we were a few points away from beating this team without the services of one of our starters," remarked Washington head coach Constantine Ananiadis. "We definitely can take a lot of positives from this match." The Shoremen return to action one week from today as they host Christopher Newport at 9:00 a.m. and Centennial Conference foe Muhlenberg at 2:00 p.m. |
