3, 2006 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Host Washington College, the eighth-ranked team in the Atlantic South region, defeated visiting Piedmont College, the 13th-ranked team in the Atlantic South, 7-0, this evening in a non-conference men's tennis match at the Lifetime Fitness Center. The Shoremen improved to 1-1 with the win, while the Lions fell to 2-1 with the loss. Piedmont played with only five healthy players and, as a result, had to default at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. In doubles, WC senior Tim Riskie (Woodbury, NJ/Woodbury) and senior Mike Edison (Darnestown, MD/Good Counsel) defeated Mike Robertson and Matt Nash, 8-5, at No. 1, while junior Arturo Solis (Guatemala, Guatemala/Valle Verde School) and senior Maciek Prytula (Szczecin, Poland/PLO) bested Valentin Sigartau and Taylor Smith, 8-6, at No. 2. Solis, the top-ranked singles player in the region, bested Sigartau, the region's 14th-ranked singles player, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1 singles. Riskie rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, win against Robertson at No. 2. Washington freshman Anantha Bhaskar (Chennai, India/National Open School) posted a a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Nash at No. 3, while Edison recorded a 6-1, 6-1, win at over Smith at No. 4. Prytula topped Jake LeMaster, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5. The Shoremen return to action March 15th with two matches at Stetson. Washington will play Oxford College of Emory at 10:00 a.m. and Stetson at 2:30 p.m. |
