2006 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Washington College junior Arturo Solis (Guatemala, Guatemala/Valle Verde School) won three matches before falling in the semifinals of singles play at the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Singles & Doubles Championships this weekend at the University of Mary Washington. Solis and senior Tim Riskie (Woodbury, NJ/Woodbury) lost in the first round of doubles on Saturday. Solis, seeded fourth in the singles tournament and ranked first in singles in the Atlantic South region, bested Scott Mackenzie of Williams, the 18th-ranked singles player from the Northeast, 6-4, 7-5, in the quarterfinal round of singles on Sunday. Middlebury's Brian Waldron, seeded second in the tournament and ranked first in singles in the Northeast, defeated Solis, 7-6(6), 6-4, in the semifinals. Solis opened Saturday's matches with a 7-6(2), 6-4, win over Middlebury's Ari Beilin, the fourth-ranked player from the Northeast, in the first round of singles competition. Solis then bested UC Santa Cruz's Shane Templeman, the fifth-ranked singles player from the West region, 6-2, 6-1, in the second round. "Arturo had a great run in the championship and a great season," remarked Washington College head coach Constantine Ananiadis. "He was the only non-senior among the four semifinalists, so we're looking forward to him coming back to the championship next year and going even further. Waldron played a high-quality match today and deserved to win." Solis has now achieved All-American status in singles each of the past two seasons. Solis and Riskie, ranked fourth in doubles in the Atlantic South, fell to Tristan Beach and Will Boe-Weigaard of Bates, the second-ranked doubles team in the Northeast, 7-5, 6-4, in the first round of doubles competition on Saturday. |
