Solis Wins ITA Regional Singles Title
Junior Advances to National Event Later this Month

FREDERICKSBURG, VA -- Washington College junior men's tennis player Arturo Solis (Guatemala, Guatemala/Valle Verde School) won the Singles Championship this weekend at the ITA Southeast Regionals held Saturday, Sunday, and today at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA. Solis advances to the ITA National Small College Championships to be held October 13-16 at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, FL.

In today's championship match, Solis, seeded second in singles, defeated fifth-seeded Zach Rodd of Swarthmore, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. Solis won the match with a clean forehand winner. Solis is the second Shoreman to claim the ITA Southeast Regional Singles Championship in three years. Pete Taylor '04 claimed the crown in 2003. Solis also assured himself of 2006 All-American status by claiming the championship.

Solis, seeded second in singles, opened singles play with a 6-0, 6-3, win over Neil Caniga of Moravian. He then bested Jon Braig of Mary Washington, 6-1, 6-0, in the second round and ninth-seeded Stephen Kuhn of Carnegie Mellon, 6-4, 6-2, in the third round. In the quarterfinals, Solis defeated eighth-seeded Joe Vasoontara of Johns Hopkins, 6-1, 6-0. On Monday morning, he bested fourth-seeded Jon Clair of Mary Washington, 6-2, 6-1, in the semifinals.

Senior Mike Edison (Darnestown, MD/Good Counsel) and senior Tim Riskie (Woodbury, NJ/Woodury) also competed in Championship singles. Edison defeated Tyler Robinson of Salisbury, 7-5, 6-2, in the first round before falling to ninth-seeded John James of Mary Washington, 6-3, 6-2, in the second round. Riskie went 0-2 in singles play, including a 6-2, 6-2 loss to Clair in the first round.

Solis and Riskie advanced to the quarterfinals in Championship Doubles. They began their run with an 8-2 win against Raffe Roberti and Nick Kennedy of Johns Hopkins in round one and an 8-4 win against Mike Durkin and Jon Pollak of Mary Washington in round two. Solis and Riskie trailed, 3-0, in round two before rallying for the win. In the quarterfinals, they fell to fifth-seeded Jordan Koslosky and Yiran Liu of Carnegie Mellon, 9-7.

In B Draw Singles, freshman Michal Szymanski (Redlo, Poland/Gunston Day School, MD) advanced to the finals of the consolation bracket. After losing his first round match, Szymanksi defeated Nick Hojsack of King's, 6-3, 6-4, and Sean Lynch of Moravian, 6-4, 7-5, in his first two consolation matches. In the consolation quarterfinals, Szymanski defeated Adam Peters of Christopher Newport, 6-4, 7-5. He then advanced by default in the consolation semifinals before falling to Matt Vaughn of Christopher Newport, 6-1, 6-4, in the consolation final.

Senior Ronen Kashvin (Rishon Le Tzion, Israel/Hashmonaim Bat-Yam) also competed in B Draw Singles. Kashvin lost his first round match, but bounced back to defeat Andrew Hetsko of Marywood, 6-3, 6-4, in his first consolation match. Kashvin then defeated John Henry of Lebanon Valley, 6-1, 6-1 in the second consolation round. He then fell to Worth Richardson of Christopher Newport in the consolation quarterfinals, 6-3, 6-0.

In B Draw Doubles, Kashvin played with Matt Vaughn of Christopher Newport and reached the finals. Kashvin and Vaughn defeated Anthony Checchio and Andrew Thornton of Bridgewater, 8-6, in the second round after receiving a first round bye. Kashvin and Vaughn then defeated Spencer Svetcov and Ryan Thompson of Carnegie Mellon in the quarterfinals, 8-5, and Tripp Weber and Lawrence Wei of Johns Hopkins in the semifinals, 8-5. In the final, Kashvin and Vaughn lost to Alex Buxbaum and Thomas Kinrade of Haverford, 8-4.

Edison and Szymanski also competed in B Draw Doubles, advancing to the consolation final. After a first round bye, they lost to Webber and Wei, 8-6. In their first consolation match, Edison and Szymanski defeated Steven Inge and Adam Peters of Christopher Newport, 8-3. After advancing through the consolation quarterfinals by default, Edison and Szymanski defeated Shawn Becker and Eric Varge of Lebanon Valley, 8-5, in the consolation semifinals. In the consolation finals, Jason Dunn and Braig of Mary Washington defeated Edison and Szymanski, 8-3.
