WC Wraps Up Hosting Rights for CC Playoffs

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Host Washington College, the 14th-ranked team in Division III and third-ranked team in the Atlantic South, bested visiting Haverford College, the seventh-ranked team in the Atlantic South, 6-1, in a Centennial Conference men's tennis match this afternoon at the Lifetime Fitness Center. Both the Shoremen (16-3, 8-0 Centennial) and Fords (12-2, 6-1) came into the match with unbeaten Centennial records. Washington clinched the top seed and hosting rights for next weekend's Centennial Conference Playoffs with today's victory.

The Shoremen rolled through doubles to take the first point of the match. Freshman Anantha Bhaskar (Chennai, India/National Open School) and freshman Rafael Roldan (Quito, Ecuador/Academia Cotopaxi) bested Marc Adelberg and D. Tad Henry, 8-0, at No. 3. Washington at No. 1 and No. 2 by identical 8-1 scores. Junior Arturo Solis (Guatemala, Guatemala/Valle Verde School) and senior Tim Riskie (Woodbury, NJ/Woodbury), the region's fourth ranked doubles team, beat Alex Buxbaum and Thomas Kinrade at No. 1, while senior Mike Edison (Darnestown, MD/Good Counsel) and senior Maciek Prytula (Szczecin, Poland/PLO) were winners over Evan Stiegel and Elmar Trust at No. 2.

Solis, ranked first in the region in singles, led off singles with a 6-1, 6-1, win over Steigel. Riskie followed with a 6-0, 6-3, win against Trust at No. 2 to put the Shoremen up, 3-0. Edison clinched the match for the Shoremen when he completed a 6-3, 6-4, win over Buxbaum at No. 4. Kinrade picked up a point for Haverford with a 7-6(4), 1-6, 10-4, victory over Bhaskar at No. 3. Prytula knocked off Stephen Fader, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 5 and Roldan bested Kellan Webb, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 6.

The Shoremen, who have now won 13 consecutive matches, return to action Wednesday with a 3:30 p.m. home match against Salisbury.
