25, 2006 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College men's tennis team won a pair of home matches Saturday afternoon. In the morning, the Shoremen, the ninth-ranked team in the Atlantic South, defeated Christopher Newport, 6-1. The afternoon match saw Washington win its Centennial Conference opener against Muhlenberg, 7-0. The Shoremen are now 5-3 overall this season, while Christopher Newport is 5-4 and Muhlenberg is 1-2. Against Christopher Newport, Washington won all three doubles matches to pick up the first point. Junior Arturo Solis (Guatemala, Guatemala/Valle Verde School) and senior Tim Riskie (Woodbury, NJ/Woodbury), ranked fourth in the region in doubles, cruised to an 8-1 win over Eddie Glidewell and John Mook at No. 1. Senior Mike Edison (Darnestown, MD/Good Counsel) and senior Maciek Prytula (Szczecin, Poland/PLO) added an 8-3 win at No. 2, while freshman Anantha Bhaskar (Chennai, India/National Open School) and freshman Rafael Roldan (Quito, Ecuador/Academia Cotopaxi) posted an 8-5 win at No. 3. Solis, ranked first in the region in singles, defeated Glidewell, ranked 12th in the region, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1 to open singles play and give the Shoremen a 2-0 lead in the match. A 6-1, 6-2 win by Bhaskar at No. 3 extended the lead to 3-0. Steven Inge picked up the lone Captain win by defeating Riskie, 7-6(3), 6-1, at No. 2. Riskie battled back from a 5-0 deficit in the first set of that match to force the tie-breaker. Prytula clinched the win for the Shoremen with a 6-2, 6-3, win at No. 5 singles over Matt Brueggemann. A 6-2, 6-4, win for Roldan at No. 6 and a 6-2, 3-6, 10-5 victory for Edison at No. 4 completed the Shoremen's 6-1 win over the Christopher Newport. Washington lost a total of three games in doubles and 11 games in singles in the sweep of Muhlenberg. Prytula and Edison were 8-1 winners at No. 1 doubles, Bhaskar and Roldan won, 8-0, at No. 2 doubles, and freshman Michal Szymanski (Redlo, Poland/Gunston Day School, MD) and freshman Brian Danver (Montgomery Village, MD/St. Albans) posted an 8-2 win at No. 3. Solis cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Muhlenberg's Brad Gutwillig at No. 1 singles. Bhaskar was a 6-0, 6-2, winner at No. 2, while Prytula won, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3. Roldan added a 6-0, 6-1, win at No. 4, while senior Ronen Kashvin (Rishon Le Tzion, Israel/Hasmonaim Bat-Yam) posted a 6-2, 6-2, win at No. 5 and Danver was a 6-2, 6-1, winner at No. 6. The Shoremen return to action tomorrow with an 11:00 a.m. match against Washington and Lee, the 11th-ranked team in Division III. |
