March 5, 2005 LEXINGTON, VA -- The host Washington and Lee men's tennis team, ranked third in the Atlantic South region and 10th in all of Division III, defeated visiting Washington College, ranked fifth in the region and 18th in Division III, today, 6-1, in Lexington, VA. The Generals improved to 4-4 with the win, while the Shoremen slipped to 0-4 with the loss. Junior Tim Riskie (Woodbury, NJ/Woodbury) accounted for Washington's point in the match by upending Jon Malooly, who is ranked 18th in the region in singles, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(4), at No. 3 singles. Washington sophomore Arturo Solis (Guatemala, Guatemala/Valle Verde School), ranked 13th in the region in singles, fell to Paul McClure, ranked seventh in the region and 23rd in Division III, 7-6(6), 6-7(4), (10-7), at No. 1 singles. "W&L was a better team today," remarked Washington head coach Constantine Ananiadis, "but we're keeping our heads up and are looking forward to the rest of our Spring Break trip." Ananiadis was also upbeat about Riskie's performance at third singles, remarking, "I'm happy for Tim. He's been in some close matches before and I'm glad this one went his way." The Shoremen return to action Tuesday with a 2:00 p.m. match at 24th-ranked Piedmont. Match Results |
