March 8, 2005 DEMOREST, GA -- The Washington College men's tennis team, ranked 18th in Division III and fifth in the Atlantic South region, defeated host Piedmont College, ranked 24th in Division III and seventh in the region, by a final score of 4-2 this afternoon. The Shoremen won the doubles point and claimed three of the five completed singles matches. The Washington tandem of senior Asfand Farouk (Karachi, Pakistan/City School) and junior Tim Riskie (Woodbury, NJ/Woodbury), ranked 12th in the Atlantic South region, defeated Sebastian Stanescu and Valentine Sigartu, ranked fifth in the region and 17th in Division III, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles. Junior Mike Edison (Darnestown, MD/Good Counsel) and junior Maciek Prytula (Szczecin, Poland/PLO) added an 8-6 win at No. 2 to give Washington the doubles point. Third doubles was not completed due to time constraints. After the Shoremen lost at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, Riskie posted a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, win at No. 3 to even the score of the match at 2-2. Prytula put the Shoremen ahead with a 6-4, 6-2, victory at No. 5. Edison clinched the victory for the Shoremen by winning at No. 4, 6-1, 6-2. The match was then stopped due to time constraints. The win was the first of the season for the Shoremen (1-4), who opened the season with losses to three Division I teams and Washington and Lee, which is ranked 10th in Division III. "We've been telling our guys that we've been improving and that our time would come. There's nothing like a win against a nationally-ranked team to confirm that," noted Washington head coach Constantine Ananiadis. "We're looking forward to playing Emory on Friday." The Shoremen's match at Emory, the top-ranked team in the region and the third-ranked team in Division III, will begin at 2:00 p.m. Friday. Match Results |
