April 1, 2005 BALTIMORE, MD -- The 18th-ranked Washington College men's tennis team dropped a Centennial Conference match for the first time ever this afternoon, falling to host Johns Hopkins, 4-3, in Baltimore, MD. The Shoremen (3-6, 2-1 Centennial) came into the match 90-0 all-time in Centennial Conference play and had won 122 consecutive conference matches in a streak dating back to 1985. The Shoremen, who were without senior captain and No. 2 singles player Asfand Farouk (Karachi, Pakistan/City School), captured the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Sophomore Arturo Solis (Guatemala, Guatemala/Valle Verde School) and junior Tim Riskie (Woodbury, NJ/Woodbury) were 9-8(2) winners at No. 1, while juniors Maciek Prytula (Szczecin, Poland/PLO) and Mike Edison (Darnestown, MD/Good Counsel) posted an 8-5 win at No. 2. Washington's other two points came at No. 1 and No. 4 singles. Solis was a 6-2, 6-2, winner at No. 1, while Prytula recorded a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4. Hopkins (6-2, 1-0) won the match when Raffie Roberti defeated Edison, 6-1, 1-6, 7-6(5) at No. 3 singles. "Johns Hopkins played very well," remarked Washington head coach Constantine Ananiadis. "Our guys fought hard without our senior captain today, but it wasn't good enough. Hopkins deserves credit for hanging in the match after losing the doubles point." Washington's last conference loss was a 6-3 Middle Atlantic Conference loss to Haverford in 1985. The Shoremen return to action tomorrow with two home matches - an 11:00 a.m. Centennial Conference match against Gettysburg and a 3:00 p.m. match against eighth-ranked Mary Washington.
