4, 2004 TOWSON, MD -- The Washington College men's tennis team competed at the ITA Southeast Regionals held Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and today at Goucher College. Sophomores Vivian Chhetri (Delhi, India/Prachar Vidhlaya) and Arturo Solis (Guatemala, Guatemala/Vallo Verde School) advanced to the semifinals in doubles play and quarterfinals in singles play. Chhetri and Solis opened their doubles run with an 8-2 win over Stephen Kuhn and Rex Carazo-Zapetis in the first round. In the second round, Chhetri and Solis defeated Jae Ko and John Pollak of Mary Washington, 8-4. In the quarterfinals, Chhetri and Solis bested Joe Vasoontara and Krishna Potarazu of Johns Hopkins, 8-3. The tournament's top-seeded doubles team, Mary Washington's Paul Bristow and Nate Hathaway eliminated Chhetri and Solis in the semifinals, 8-6. Chhetri opened singles play with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Michael Kelly-Sell of Johns Hopkins and then defeated Vahe Vartan of Haverford, 6-0, 6-0. In the third round, Chhetri was a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, winner against Goucher's Brandon Harris. Chhetri was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Washington and Lee's top-seeded David Shay, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. Solis defeated Goucher's Chris Cobey in the first round of singles, 6-1, 6-0, and then knocked off Mary Washington's Pollak, 6-4, 6-2. Solis posted another dominant win in the third round, deeating Washington and Lee's John Malooly, 6-2, 6-1. Mary Washington's Bristown bested Solis in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 7-6(5). Senior Asfand Farouk (Karachi, Pakistan/City School) and junior Tim Riskie (Woodbury, NJ/Woodbury) each advanced to the second round in singles before being eliminated. Farouk topped Carnegie Mellon's Carl Yang, 6-3, 6-2, in the first round, while Riskie was a 6-2, 6-4 winner against Wynn Thane of Goucher. Farouk and Riskie advanced to the quarterfinal round in doubles. In the first round, they defeated Garrett Russell and Matt Novack of Salisbury, 8-2. Farouk and Riskie then bested Justin Durand and Jonathan Lo of Swarthmore, 9-7, in the second round. In the quarterfinals, the Washington tandem fell to top-seeded Bristown and Hathaway, 8-2. Juniors Maciek Prytula (Szczecin, Poland/PLO) and Nick Komljenovic (Glen Burnie, MD/Glen Burnie) won qualifying matches in singles before being eliminated in the first round. Prytula defeated Roul D'Silva of Swarthmore, 6-1, 6-1, while Komljenovic defeated James Han of Shenandoah, 6-0, 6-2. The Shoremen will close out their fall schedule at the Collegiate Tennis Outdoors Invitational in Newport News, VA, October 15-17. WAC Match Results
