17, 2004 NEWPORT NEWS, VA -- Washington College sophomore Arturo Solis (Guatemala, Guatemala/Valle Verde School) defeated four Division I players to win Flight B2 in singles play at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Tennis Invitational, hosted by Old Dominion University, Friday, Saturday, and today. Senior Asfand Farouk (Karachi, Pakistan/City School) and sophomore Vivian Chhetri (Delhi, India/Prachar Vidhlaya) also competed at the tournament. Solis defeated Longwood's Chris Newman in his first match in Flight B2 singles, 7-5, 6-3. He then posted a dominant 6-4, 6-2 win over American's Sebastien Proisy in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Solis rallied for a 2-6, 6-2, (10-4), victory over Doug Banker of Richmond. In the flight final, Solis bested Pavel Suchy of Norfolk State, 7-6(5), 6-3. "Arturo showed a lot of improvement from last year this fall," noted Washington assistant coach Michael Duquette. "He is playing to win and has shown a lot of heart by battling back in matches in which he has trailed." Farouk won his first match in Flight C singles over Jason Harris of American, 7-6(1), 6-3. In the round of 16, Farouk outlasted Erin Conrad of Georgetown, 6-2, 4-6, (13-11). Farouk was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Hofstra's Andy Cha, 1-6, 7-5, (10-5). Farouk cruised through the first set in the quarterfinals and led 5-0 in the second set before cramps hindered his play. Chhetri opened singles play in Flight B1 with a 4-6, 6-3, (10-7) loss to Jeff Schnell of American. He then won a consolation match against Delaware's Jesse Carl, 8-4. Solis and Farouk lost in their first doubles match in Flight B to Alex Conanu and Kavi Sud of William & Mary, 9-8(4). WAC Match Results
