28, 2004 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Eighth-ranked Washington and Lee won four of the six singles matches to defeat 18th-ranked host Washington College in a four and one-half hour men's tennis match today at Schottland Tennis Center. The Generals improved to 12-5 on the season with the win, while the Shoremen suffered their first loss of the year and dropped to 8-1. The Shoremen captured the doubles point in dramatic fashion. The second doubles flight decided the point. W&L's Paul McClure and David Shay led 6-5, before Washington freshmen Vivian Chhetri (Delhi, India/Prachar Vidhlaya) and Arturo Solis (Guatemala, Guatemala/Vallo Verde School) mounted a rally. Chhetri and Solis picked up the next two games to take a 7-6 lead, but trailed 40-love in the final game. The WC duo battled back to win the next five points and win the match, 8-6. Prior to the thrilling finish at No. 2, Washington senior Pete Taylor (Canton, CT/Canton) and junior Asfand Farouk (Karachi, Pakistan/City School) won at No. 1, 8-3, while W&L's tandem of Chris Kimmel and K.C. Schaefer won at No. 3, 8-6. Washington and Lee took a 2-1 lead in the match by winning the first two singles flights to finish. Austin Kim defeated WC sophomore Tim Riskie (Woodbury, NJ/Woodbury) at No. 6, 6-0, 6-2, while Shay defeated Chhetri at No. 2, 6-2, 6-3. The Shoremen tied the score at 2-2 when Solis completed his 6-2, 6-4, win over Graham Nix at No. 3. The final three singles matches to finish each went three sets. Schaefer outlasted Washington sophomore Maciek Prytula (Szczecin, Poland/PLO), 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, at No. 5 to give the Generals a 3-2 lead. W&L clinched the match when Jon Malooly completed a 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 win over Farouk at No. 4. Farouk held a 5-2 lead in the third set while battling cramps. The cramps worsened with Farouk leading, 5-4, and he struggled to finish the final three games. Taylor accounted for the Shoremen's third point by rallying to defeat McClure, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 1. "We were a few points away from beating a very good team," commented Washington College head coach Constantine Ananiadis. "We're looking forward to playing them again in May in the NCAA Tournament. We played hard today and I think we learned a lot in this match." The Shoremen are back in action Wednesday with a 2:30 p.m. match at Division I Richmond. Match Results
