Shoremen Stop Swarthmore, 5-2
Taylor Wins Handily at No. 1 Singles

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Host Washington College, ranked 20th in Division III and fifth in the Atlantic South region, defeated visiting Swarthmore, ranked 18th in Division III and fourth in the region, 5-2, in a men's tennis match this afternoon at Schottland Tennis Center. The win boosted the Shoremen's record this season to 10-5, marking the team's 20th consecutive season with at least 10 victories.

The Shoremen took the doubles point with decisive wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Senior Pete Taylor (Canton, CT/Canton) and junior Asfand Farouk (Karachi, Pakistan/City School), ranked eighth in the region for doubles, cruised to an 8-1 win over Frank Visciano and Mike Noreika, the region's second-ranked doubles team, at No. 1. Freshmen Vivian Chhetri (Delhi, India/Prachar Vidhlaya) and Arturo Solis (Guatemala, Guatemala/Vallo Verde School), the region's 16th-ranked doubles team, posted an 8-2 win at No. 2.

Washington captured four of the six singles flights. Taylor, ranked first in the region, recorded a dominant 6-1, 6-2, win over Zac Rodd, the region's 16th-ranked singles players, at No. 1. Chhetri, ranked eighth in the region, was a 6-4, 2-6, (10-8) winner over Jon Reiss, ranked 28th in the region, at No. 2. Farouk added a 6-3, 6-3, win at No. 4, while sophomore Maciek Prytula (Szczecin, Poland/PLO) posted a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6.

"We're very happy to have a convincing win over a team of Swarthmore's caliber. This reestablishes us among the elite teams in the Atlantic South," commented Washington head coach Constantine Ananiadis. "Everyone contributed and competed in this victory; it was a true team effort. Now we're looking forward to finishing the conference season strong and carry our momentum into the NCAA Tournament.

The Shoremen are back in action tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against Haverford.
