LEWISTON, ME -- Washington College senior Peter Taylor (Canton, CT/Canton) and junior Asfand Farouk (Karachi, Pakistan/City School) earned All-American status by advancing to the quarterfinals in doubles at the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Individual Championships today at Bates College.

Taylor and Farouk completed a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 first round doubles win over Loren Collins and Ben Lundell of Gustavus Adolphus today in a match that began on Saturday, but was suspended due to lightning. In today's quarterfinals, Taylor and Farouk fell to Michael Thoeresz and Brian Murphy of Redlands, the second-seeded tandem in the tournament, 6-2, 6-4.

Taylor, the second-seeded singles player, was eliminated in the first round of the Singles Championship on Saturday, falling to Brian Waldron of Middlebury, 6-4, 6-2. Taylor and Farouk dropped the first set of their first round match of the Doubles Championship, 6-1, against Loren Collins and Ben Lundell of Gustavus Adolphus, but took a 4-3 lead in the second set before play was called off.

Taylor was also named the 2004 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III National Senior Player of the Year in a ceremony held Friday night. Taylor posted a record of 25-5 in singles play during the 2003-04 season, including a 16-2 record at No. 1 in dual match play. He captured the ITA Division III Atlantic South Singles Championship in the fall and finished second in Division III at the ITA Small College National Singles Championship. Taylor is the first Shoreman to win the award since 1991, when Scott Flippin Read earned the distinction.

Taylor was earlier named the ITA's Atlantic South Senior Player of the Year and was the recipient of the region's Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship and Leadership Award. Washington freshman Vivian Chhetri (Delhi, India/Prachar Vidhlaya) was named the ITA Division III Atlantic South Rookie of the Year.
