Shoremen Open Season at MWC Kick-Off
Taylor & Farouk Win Twice in Doubles
FREDERICKSBURG, VA -- The Washington College
men's tennis team opened its 2003-04 season at the Mary Washington Kick-Off
Classic yesterday and today. The Shoremen picked up four wins in singles
play and two wins in doubles play. The tournament featured the Shoremen,
host Mary Washington, and Division I schools George Washington and Liberty.
In singles play, senior Peter Taylor (Canton,
CT/Canton) picked up a win in Flight 1, defeating Paul Bristow
of Mary Washington, 6-2, 7-6(7). Junior Asfand Farouk (Karachi,
Pakistan/City School) notched in a win Flight 2, topping Mary Washington's
Dan Uyar, 6-2, 6-1. Sophomore Maciek Prytula (Szczecin, Poland/PLO)
and senior Brant Whisler (Willow Grove, PA/Upper Moreland) each
won a match in Flight 7. Prytula downed Mike Burns of Mary
Washington, 6-4, 6-3, while Whisler defeated Mary Washington's Matt
Hoover, 6-3, 6-0.
In doubles, Taylor and Farouk won two matches
in Flight 1, downing Bristow and Uyar, 9-8(5) and Mary Washington's
Tim Ryan and Nate Hathaway, 8-1.
Washington returns to action at the ITA Southeast
Regionals held October 3-6 at Swarthmore College.
