Prytula Captures CC Singles Crown
Teammate Riskie Finishes Second

SWARTHMORE, PA -- Washington College sophomore Maciek Prytula (Szczecin, Poland/PLO) is the 2004 Centennial Conference Singles Champion. Prytula and sophomore teammate Tim Riskie (Woodbury, NJ/Woodbury) advanced to the final round in singles at the conference's singles and doubles championships, held Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, at Haverford and Swarthmore Colleges. A final match between the teammates was not played and, instead, Prytula, who was seeded fourth in the tournament, was declared the champion.

Prytula and Riskie both received first-round byes in the tournament. In the second round, Prytula defeated Mike Kelly-Sell of Johns Hopkins, 6-3, 6-0, while Riskie bested Jeremy Landis of Ursinus, 6-0, 6-3. In the quarterfinals, Prytula topped Haverford's Aaron Scherb, 6-2, 6-4, while Riskie eliminated second-seeded Hans Hardisty of Gettysburg, 6-1, 6-4. In the semifinals, Prytula rolled to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Haverford's Elmar Trust and Riskie pulled out a 6-3, 7-6(2), 6-1 win over third-seeded Carl Lederman of Haverford.

Prytula's singles title marks the fifth Centennial singles crown in a row won by a Washington player. Prytula's older brother Bart Prytula accounted for one of the championships in the current streak by winning the title in 2001.

Elsewhere in singles play, Washington senior Brant Whisler (Willow Grove, PA/Upper Moreland) defeated McDaniel's Brian Kastner, 6-1, 6-2, in the first round before falling to Justin Chan of Johns Hopkins, 7-5, 6-2, in round two.

Freshman Vivian Chhetri (Delhi, India/Prachar Vidhlaya) and senior Ben Dernis (Paris, France/New Hampton, NH) advanced to the semifinals in singles play. They defeated Nick Kennedy and Krishna Potarazu of Johns Hopkins, 8-5, in the second round after receiving a first round bye. In the quarterfinals, Chhetri and Dernis then eliminated the fourth-seeded Haverford team of Lederman and Matt Stein, 8-6, in the quarterfinals before losing to the top seed and eventual champions, Chris Beegle and Eric Schroeder of Dickinson, 8-6, in the semifinals.
