2003 FREDERICKSBURG, VA -- The 18th-ranked Washington College men's tennis team avenged a regular season loss to 16th-ranked Washington & Lee with a 4-2 win over the Generals this afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Shoremen (13-5) advance to face host Mary Washington, ranked 10th in Division III, in a second round match tomorrow at noon. The Shoremen secured the doubles point by winning the first two matches to finish. Sophomore Asfand Farouk (Karachi, Pakistan/City School) and senior Alvaro Prado (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Liceo Javier) were 8-3 winners at No. 2, while senior Louis Blanchette (Dieppe, New Brunswick, Canada/Mathieu-Martin) and freshman Maciek Prytula (Szczecin, Poland/PLO) won at No. 3, 8-3. Washington took a 3-0 lead after Blanchette won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles and Farouk won, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4 singles, but W&L pulled within one point at 3-2 with wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. That left the top two singles spots as the only matches remaining and both reached three sets. WC sophomore Rafael Martins (Vitoria, Brazil/Prof. Anibal de Freitas) edged out Austin Kim, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 at No. 2 to clinch the match for the Shoremen and give them the 4-2 win. Martins' win was all the more crucial given that junior Peter Taylor (Canton, CT/Canton) was trailing in the third set at No. 1 when the match ended after WC picked up its fourth point. Washington & Lee won the regular season meeting between the two teams, 5-2, on March 30th. Match Results
