Washington U. Bests WC at ITA's
Shoremen to Play in 7th-Place Match

ST. PETER, MN -- Seventh-ranked Washington University defeated ninth-ranked Washington College, 6-1, today in the consolation semifinals of the Division III ITA National Indoor Team Championships at Gustavus Adolphus College. The Shoremen (0-2) will finish play at the event tonight in the seventh-place match at 8:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.

The Bears won the doubles point by sweeping all three matches. At No. 1, Max Schlather and Shaul Yecheskel, the 17th-ranked doubles team in Division III, defeated WC junior Peter Taylor (Canton, CT/Canton) and sophomore Rafael Martins (Vitoria, Brazil/Prof. Anibal de Freitas/Cristelo), the 21st-ranked duo in Division III, by an 8-5 count. At No. 2, Division III's sixth-ranked tandem, Neil Kenner and Ari Rosenthal bested WC sophomore Asfand Farouk (Karachi, Pakistan/City School) and senior Alvaro Prado (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Liceo Javier), 8-5. Brian Alvo and Zack Fayne beat senior Louis Blanchette (Dieppe, New Brunswick, Canada/Mathieu-Martin) and freshman Maciek Prytula (Szczecin, Polan), 8-6, at No. 3.

Taylor, Division III's 12th-ranked singles player, scored Washington's only win in singles for the second match in a row, defeating 15th-ranked Alvo, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 1. Kenner, ranked 35th, beat Martins, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2, while Schlather, ranked 48th, topped Blanchette, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3. David Genovese downed Farouk, 6-1, 7-6 at No. 4, Rosenthal beat Prado, 6-1, 7-6 at No. 5, and Yecheskel topped Prytula, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 6.

The Shoremen will play 16th-ranked M.I.T. in tonight's seventh-place match.
