PETER, MN -- The ninth-ranked Washington College men's tennis team fell to 11th-ranked Trinity (TX) University, 6-1, this afternoon in first round action of the Division III ITA National Indoor Team Championships at Gustavus Adolphus College. The match was the Shoremen's first dual match of the season. Trinity won the doubles point by taking two of the three doubles matches. At No. 1, Sean Fifield and Ryan Scott, the eighth-ranked doubles team in Division III, topped WC junior Peter Taylor (Canton, CT/Canton) and sophomore Rafael Martins (Vitoria, Brazil/Prof. Anibal de Freitas/Cristelo), the 21st-ranked duo in Division III, by an 8-5 count. WC sophomore Asfand Farouk (Karachi, Pakistan/City School) and senior Alvaro Prado (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Liceo Javier) defeated Stefan Parker and Adam Rubenstein, 9-8(6). Trinity won at No. 3, where Jordan Taillon and Nick Kaloudis beat senior Louis Blanchette (Dieppe, New Brunswick, Canada/Mathieu-Martin) and freshman Maciek Prytula (Szczecin, Polan), 8-4. Taylor, Division III's 12th-ranked singles player, scored Washington's only win in singles, downing Parker, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 1. Scott, ranked 32nd, beat Martins, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2, while Rubenstein, ranked 44th, topped Blanchette, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3. Tenth-ranked Taillon downed Farouk at No. 4, 7-5, 6-1, 20th-ranked Fifield swept Prado, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5, and Chad Waryas defeated Prytula, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 6. The Shoremen will face either No. 2 Emory or No. 7 Washington (MO) University in tomorrow's consolation semifinals, set for 9:30 a.m. Eastern Standard Time, and will play in the fifth or seventh-place match tomorrow night at 8:30 p.m. EST.
