27, 2003 HAVERFORD, PA -- The Washington College Shoremen claimed the singles championship and clinched the doubles championship this weekend at the Centennial Conference Tournament hosted by Haverford College. Junior Peter Taylor (Canton, CT/Canton) won the singles crown for the second straight year. Taylor and senior Louis Blanchette (Dieppe, NB, Canada/Mathieu-Martin) will play against sophomore Asfand Farouk (Karachi, Pakistan/City School) and freshman Maciek Prytula (Szczecin, Poland/PLO) tomorrow for the doubles title on the WC campus. Taylor marched to the singles crown without losing a set. He defeated Geoff Gamble of Gettysburg, 6-1, 6-1 in the second round and Justin Belisario of Johns Hopkins, 6-0, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. His toughest test came from teammate Farouk, whom he beat, 6-3, 7-5, in the semifinals. In the final, Taylor breezed past Kevin Alford of Johns Hopkins, 6-1, 6-1. Farouk reached the semifinals in singles by defeating Dave Johnson of McDaniel, 6-1, 6-0 in the second round and Greg Bertelsen of Dickinson, 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. Blanchette also reached the semifinals, ousting Grant Roch of Johns Hopkins, 6-1, 6-1, in the second round and Carl Lederman of Haverford, 6-2, 6-4, in the quarterfinals. Blanchette lost to Alford, 5-7, 6-3, 6-0 in the semifinals. In doubles, Farouk and Prytula defeated McDaniel's Aaron Taylor and Matt Wolfe, 8-0, Haverford's tandem of Lederman and Matt Stein, 8-5, and Muhlenberg's Matthew Fleissig/Brad Scheller, 8-4, to reach the championships. Taylor and Blanchette cruised to the final match, beating Roch and Hopkins teammate Mike Kelly-Sell, 8-3, Alex Chester and Dan Lindenberg of Franklin & Marshall, 8-1, and Jeff Kraft and Cameron Parke of Muhlenberg, 8-1.
