2002 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The sixth-ranked Washington College Shoremen defeated 20th-ranked Washington & Lee, 4-1, today in the second round of the NCAA Division III Team Championship Tournament. The Shoremen dropped the doubles point, but came back to win four straight singles matches. All three doubles matches were closely contested. WC junior Louis Blanchette (Dieppe, New Brunswick, Canada/Mathieu-Martin) and freshman Asfand Farouk (Karachi, Pakistan/City School) won 8-6 at No. 3 against Paul McClure and K.C. Schaefer, but W&L took the top two spots to earn the point. Rhys James and Andrew Roberts were 8-6 winners at No. 1 over WC seniors Jose' Lejarraga (Bahia Blanca, Argentina/Escuela Normal Superior) and Seth Morgan (Chalmette, LA/J.J. Pearce, TX) and the General duo of Austin Kim and Graham Nix posted a 9-8(5) win over sophomore Peter Taylor (Canton, CT/Canton) and freshman Rafael Martins (Vitoria, Brazil/Prof. Anibal de Freitas/Cristelo) at No. 2. In singles, Washington captured the first four singles matches that finished, each of them in two sets. Lejarraga topped James, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 1. Taylor defeated McClure 7-6(6), 6-0 at No. 2, while Martins bested Kim 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 and Farouk won against Nix 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4. The final three round of the NCAA Division III Team Championships will take place next Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the University of California-Santa Cruz. The matchups for the quarterfinal round will be determined Monday evening. Match Results
