2002 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The sixth-ranked Washington College Shoremen opened play in the NCAA Division III Tournament with a 4-1 win over visiting Swarthmore College today at Schottland Tennis Center. WC junior Louis Blanchette (Dieppe, New Brunswick, Canada/Mathieu-Martin) and freshman Asfand Farouk (Karachi, Pakistan/City School) earned 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles over Ben Rae and Mike Norieka. Shoreman seniors Jose Lejarraga (Bahia Blanca, Argentina/Escuela Normal Superior) and Seth Morgan (Chalmette, LA/J.J. Pearce, TX) soon followed with an 8-4 win at No. 1 over John Thomas and Frank Visciano to earn Washington the doubles point. The Shoremen took a 2-0 lead when Lejarraga completed a 6-3, 6-1 win over Thomas at No. 1 singles and went up 3-0 when sophomore Peter Taylor (Canton, CT/Canton) wrapped up a 6-1, 6-0 win over Justin Singer at No. 2. The Garnet earned its lone point of the day at No. 4 singles, where Visciano defeated freshman Rafael Martins (Vitoria, Brazil/Prof. Anibal de Freitas/Cristelo) 6-2, 6-2. The Shoremen clinched the team victory at No. 5 singles, where Farouk topped Rae in the first set and battled back from a 0-3 hole in the second to post a 6-3, 6-4 win. Tomorrow, the Shoremen will face 20th-ranked Washington & Lee, a 5-1 winner over 10th-ranked Mary Washington today, in a 12:00 p.m. second round match at Schottland Tennis Center. Match Results
