Shoremen Sweep Garnet, 7-0
WC Improves to 9-3 with Win

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College Shoremen, ranked seventh in Division III and second in the South Atlantic region, improved to 9-3 with a 7-0 sweep of Swarthmore, ranked 25th in Division III and seventh in the region.

In doubles, senior Jose Lejarraga (Bahia Blanca, Argentina/Escuela Normal Superior) and senior Seth Morgan (Chalmette, LA/J.J. Pearce, TX), ranked second in the region as a doubles team and sixth in Division III, defeated John Thomas and Frank Visciano, the region's ninth-ranked pair, 8-1, at No. 1. Sophomore Peter Taylor (Canton, CT/Canton) and freshman Rafael Martins (Vitoria, Brazil/Prof. Anibal de Freitas/Cristelo) posted an 8-3 win at No. 2 and junior Louis Blanchette (Dieppe, New Brunswick, Canada/Mathieu-Martin) and freshman Asfand Farouk (Karachi, Pakistan/City School) were 8-2 winners at No. 3.

The Shoremen won all six singles matches in two sets. Lejarraga, ranked third in the region and seventh in the nation, defeated Thomas (13th region, 48th Division III), 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1. Morgan (seventh region, 23rd Division III) won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2, while Taylor (15th region) won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3. Martins was a 6-2, 6-1 winner at No. 4, Farouk was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at No. 5, and Blanchette was a 6-3, 6-0 winner at No. 6.

The Shoremen host 20th ranked Mary Washington, sixth in the South Atlantic, tomorrow at 11:30 a.m.
