Shoremen Top Eagles, 5-2
WC Faces Salisbury Tuesday

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College Shoremen, ranked seventh in Division III and second in the South Atlantic region, improved to 10-3 with a 5-2 win over visiting Mary Washington, ranked 20th in Division III and sixth in the region, this afternoon at Schottland Tennis Pavilion.

In doubles, the Shoremen won two of three matches to secure the day's first point. WC seniors Jose Lejarraga (Bahia Blanca, Argentina/Escuela Normal Superior) and Seth Morgan (Chalmette, LA/J.J. Pearce, TX), ranked second in the region as a doubles team and sixth in Division III, defeated Dan Uyar and Nhat Nguyen, the region's sixth-ranked pair and Division III's 24th, 8-3, at No. 1. Sophomore Peter Taylor (Canton, CT/Canton) and freshman Rafael Martins (Vitoria, Brazil/Prof. Anibal de Freitas/Cristelo) posted an 8-4 win at No. 2.

Mary Washington tied the score early on in singles play when Morgan (ranked seventh in the region, 23rd in Division III) was forced to retire at No. 2 due to injury with the score tied at 3-3 in the first set. WC took a 3-1 lead after Taylor (15th region) won at No. 3, 6-1, 6-3, and freshman Asfand Farouk (Karachi, Pakistan/City School) won at No. 5, 7-5, 6-2. Mary Washington stayed alive with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win by Uyar at No. 4, but the Shoremen secured the win with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 win by junior Louis Blanchette (Dieppe, New Brunswick, Canada/Mathieu-Martin) at No. 6.

The final match to conclude was at No. 1, where Lejarraga (third region, seventh Division III) defeated Conor Smith (sixth region, 21st Division III), 7-6, 6-4. It was Lejarraga's third win over Smith during the 2001-02 season. Lejarraga posted a 7-5, 6-2 win over Smith at September's Mary Washington Kick-Off Classic and came away with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Smith in the semifinals of the ITA Regionals in October.

The Shoremen are back in action Tuesday when they host Eastern Shore rival Salisbury at 3:00 p.m.
