WC Clinches 9th Straight CC Title
Shoremen Sweep Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, PA -- The sixth-ranked Washington College Shoremen clinched their ninth consecutive Centennial Conference team championship with a 7-0 sweep of host Gettysburg College this afternoon. The Shoremen are the only men's tennis champions the Centennial has ever known and are now 71-0 all-time in Centennial dual match play. Today's win upped WC's record in conference play this season to 7-0 and its overall record to 14-3.

The Shoremen lost a total of six games in doubles. Sophomore Peter Taylor (Canton, CT/Canton) and freshman Rafael Martins (Vitoria, Brazil/Prof. Anibal de Freitas/Cristelo) won 8-2 at No. 1, senior Jose Lejarraga (Bahia Blanca, Argentina/Escuela Normal Superior) and junior Alvaro Prado (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Liceo Javier) won 8-1 at No. 2, and freshman Asfand Farouk (Karachi, Pakistan/City School) and junior Louis Blanchette (Dieppe, New Brunswick, Canada/Mathieu-Martin) won 8-3 at No. 3.

The Shoremen won each singles match in two sets, giving up a total of nine games. Lejarraga won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1. Taylor won, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 to earn his 20th singles win of the 2001-02 season, including fall tournaments. Martins was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 3, while Farouk was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at No. 4 and Blanchette was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 5. Prado became the seventh Shoreman with at least ten singles wins this season with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6.

This weekend, the Shoremen will compete in the Centennial Conference Tournament that decides the league's singles and doubles championships. They will play at Muhlenberg Tuesday in their final Centennial Conference match of the season. That match was scheduled for this past Monday but was postponed.
