No. 7 WC Falls to No. 5 Emory, 6-1
Four Singles Matches Go Three Sets

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Emory University, the fifth-ranked men's tennis team in Division III, bested host Washington College, the seventh-ranked squad in Division III, by a 6-1 final today at Schottland Tennis Pavilion. Emory and Washington are the first and second-ranked teams, respectively, in the South Atlantic region.

Emory won the doubles point by taking two of the three matches. Tom Curran and Brad Jaffe won 8-5 at No. 3 for the Eagles, but freshman Rafael Martins (Vitoria, Brazil/Prof. Anibal de Freitas/Cristelo) and sophomore Peter Taylor (Canton, CT/Canton) posted an 8-2 win at No. 2 for the Shoremen.

At No. 1 doubles, WC seniors Jose' Lejarraga (Bahia Blanca, Argentina/Escuela Normal Superior) and Seth Morgan (Chalmette, LA/J.J. Pearce, TX), the second-ranked pair in the region and sixth in Division III, took on Emory's Mark Odgers and Alex Jacobs, the region's top-ranked duo and the fourth-ranked tandem in Division III. Lejarraga and Morgan led 7-6 in the match, but Odgers and Jacobs rallied for a 9-7 win.

In singles play, Emory picked up a pair of points in two two-set matches. Jacobs won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4, while Curran posted a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 5. The other four singles matches went the full three sets.

The Shoremen secured their point at No. 4, where Taylor, ranked 15th in the region in singles, won 12 of the final 13 games to win 4-6, 6-1, 6-0. The next match to conclude was at No. 2. Ramsay (ninth in the region, 36th in Division III) rallied after losing the first set to defeat Morgan (seventh, 23rd), 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. The final two matches to finish were at No. 1 and No. 6. Odgers (eighth, 29th) became the first Division III player to defeat Lejarraga (third, seventh) this spring by posting a 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 1. At No. 6, Jaffe defeated junior Louis Blanchette (Dieppe, New Brunswick, Canada/Mathieu-Martin), 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

The Shoremen, who are now 7-3 overall, host Western Maryland Wednesday for a 3:00 p.m. Centennial Conference match.
