24, 2002 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College Shoremen, ranked seventh in Division III, swept past Carnegie Mellon, 7-0, today in a dual match held at the Lifetime Fitness Center. The Shoremen, who are also ranked second in the South Atlantic Region, evened their record at 1-1 with the victory over the Tartans, who are ranked 11th in the region. The headline match of the contest was at No. 1 singles, where Washington senior Jose' Lejarraga (Bahia Blanca, Argentina/Escuela Normal Superior) squared off against Tartan junior Kayvon Fatahalian (Round Rock, TX/Round Rock) for the fourth time in two years. Lejarraga is the third-ranked singles player in the region and the seventh-ranked singles player in Division III, while Fatahalian is second and fifth, respectively. Lejarraga came out on top today, 6-3, 6-4 to even the pair's series at two matches a piece. Fatahalian defeated Lejarraga in the last two ITA Regional Tournament finals, while Lejarraga won last year's match in Chestertown. The match at No. 1 doubles was another marquee event. Lejarraga and senior Seth Morgan (Chalmette, LA/J.J. Pearce, TX) make up Division III's sixth-ranked doubles team and the region's second-ranked unit, while Fatahalian and junior Jonathan Hui (Toledo, OH/Maumee Val Country Day) are 19th in Division III and fifth in the region. The two pairs were also meeting for the fourth time in two years. Lejarraga and Morgan walked away with an 8-6 win today, posting their third consecutive win over Fatahalian and Hui. The Tartan team won the ITA Regional Tournament final over the Shoremen's top two players in 2000, but Lejarraga and Morgan posted wins last February in Chestertown and in this past fall's regional final. Morgan, like all of the Shoremen today, won his singles match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Morgan is the seventh-ranked singles player in the region and 23rd ranked player in Division III. Sophomore Pete Taylor (Canton, CT/Canton), ranked 15th in the region, won at No. 3, 6-2, 6-1. Freshman Asfand Farouk (Karachi, Pakistan/City School) and junior Louis Blanchette (Dieppe, New Brunswick, Canada/Mathieu-Martin) won by identical 6-1, 6-2 counts at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. Freshman Rafael Martins (Vitoria, Brazil/Prof. Anibal de Freitas/Cristelo) posted a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 6. In doubles, Taylor and Martins won 8-3 at No. 2, while Blanchette and Farouk won 8-6 at No. 3. The Shoremen are off until March 11 when they will play a 2:30 p.m. match at West Florida. Match Results
