28, 2002 HAVERFORD, PA -- The Washington College Shoremen claimed the doubles championship and clinched the singles championship this weekend at the Centennial Conference Tournament hosted by Haverford College. Sophomore Peter Taylor (Canton, CT/Canton) freshman Rafael Martins (Vitoria, Brazil/Prof. Anibal de Freitas/Cristelo) won the doubles title, while Taylor and freshman Asfand Farouk (Karachi, Pakistan/City School) will play for the singles title tomorrow on the WC campus. Taylor and Martins won 8-1 against Jason Fransen and Michael Kraus of Gettysburg to begin their run. In the quarterfinals, they blanked the Johns Hopkins team of Ashish Lall and Erhan Bedistani, 8-0. In the semifinals, they defeated Ryan Bowman and Matthew Stein of Haverford. Taylor and Martins won the final over Kevin Alford and Justin Belisario of Hopkins, 6-2, 6-2. Also in doubles, Farouk and junior Louis Blanchette (Dieppe, NB, Canada/Mathieu-Martin) won 8-3 in their first match, before falling 8-4 in the quarterfinals. Taylor swept two of his three opponents on his way to the singles final. After a first-round bye, he defeated Kraus, 7-5, 6-2 in the second round, and then blanked Dickinson's Justin Chan in the quarterfinals and Peter Law of Haverford in the semifinals. Farouk also received a first round bye. He then defeated Dan Lindenberg of Franklin & Marshall, 6-1, 6-1, Fransen, 6-1, 6-3, and Alford. 6-2, 6-3. Blanchette won 6-0, 6-0 in the first round and 6-0, 6-2 in the second, before falling in the quarterinals, 6-3, 6-4. WC Match Results
