17, 2002 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The seventh-ranked Washington College Shoremen improved to 2-2 this season with a 5-2 win over visiting Averett, the tenth-ranked team in Division III, today in the Lifetime Fitness Center. Senior Jose' Lejarraga (Bahia Blanca, Argentina/Escuela Normal Superior) defeated Averett's Vellu Antila, the top-ranked singles player in Division III, at No. 1 singles. Lejarraga, seventh in the nation, defeated Antila, 6-4, 6-0. Antila is also ranked first in the South Atlantic region, two spots ahead of Lejarraga. At No. 2, Averett's Pekka Mikkonen, 15th in the nation and fifth in the region, topped WC senior Seth Morgan (Chalmette, LA/J.J. Pearce, TX), 23rd in the nation and seventh in the region, by a 6-3, 6-2 count. The region's 17th-ranked singles player, Mikko Hermans, bested WC freshman Asfand Farouk (Karachi, Pakistan/City School), 6-3, 6-3. At No. 4, Washington sophomore Peter Taylor (Canton, CT/Canton), 15th in the region, defeated Tarmo Laaksonen, 16th in the region, 6-0, 6-1. The Shoremen's final two wins in singles came at No. 5, where freshman Rafael Martins (Vitoria, Brazil/Prof. Anibal de Freitas/Cristelo) won 6-2, 6-1, and at No. 6, where junior Louis Blanchette (Dieppe, New Brunswick, Canada/Mathieu-Martin) came away with a 6-2, 6-0 win. In doubles, Lejarraga and Morgan, the region's second-ranked and the nation's sixth-ranked team, defeated Antila and Mikkonen, 16th in the nation, fourth in the region, 8-5 at No. 1. Taylor and Martins won 9-8(6) at No. 2, and Farouk and Blanchette won 8-2 at No. 3. The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 3:00 p.m. home match against Centennial Conference school Ursinus College. Match Results
