8, 2001 SWARTHMORE, PA -- Washington College seniorsJose' Lejarraga (Bahia Blanca, Argentina/Escuela Normal Superior) and Seth Morgan (Chalmette, LA/J.J. Pearce, TX) captured the doubles championship this weekend at the ITA Southeast Regionals hosted by Swarthmore College. Lejarraga also advanced to the finals in singles play. Lejarraga and Morgan's run in doubles play began with an 8-2 win over Virginia Wesleyan's Leonard Tettech and John Tomasheski in the first round and an 8-1 victory over Todd Christianson and Nate Halfthway of Mary Washington. In the quarterfinals, the pair defeated Washington & Lee's Austin Kim and K.C. Schaeffer, 8-3. Lejarraga and Morgan won a tough semifinal match against Nhat Nguyen and Dan Uyar of Mary Washington, posting a 9-7 victory. In the championship match, the duo knocked off Kayvon Fatahalian and Jon Hui of Carnegie Mellon, 8-5. Elsewhere in doubles, junior Louis Blanchette (Dieppe, NB, Canada/Mathieu-Martin) and sophomore Peter Taylor (Canton, CT/Canton) advanced to the quarterfinals, while senior Tomas Budimir (Split, Croatia/Tourist Catering School) and junior Alvaro Prado (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Liceo Javier) reached the second round. In singles, five Shoremen won their first two matches to advance to the 16-player third round. Lejarraga, Blanchette, Prado, Morgan, and Taylor all played for spots in the quarterfinals. Blanchette dropped a 6-1, 6-2 match to Mary Washington's Conor Smith, an eventual semifinalist. Taylor was eliminated by Fatahalian, the tournament's champion, by a 7-6(3), 6-2. Morgan and Prado faced each other in their round of 16 match, with Morgan posting a 6-1, 6-2. Lejarraga defeated Matt Rogers of Mary Washington, 6-3, 6-1, to advance to the quarterfinals. Lejarraga and Morgan each posted quarterfinal wins. Lejarraga notched a 6-3, 6-1 win over Washington & Lee's Paul McClure, while Morgan posted a 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 victory against Nick Peel of Salisbury. Lejarraga went on to win his semifinal match by a 7-5, 6-1 win over Conor Smith, but Morgan fell in his quest to complete an all-Shoremen final with a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Fatahalian. Fatahalian won the singles championship by defeating Lejarraga in the final round, 6-4, 6-1. Washington returns to action February 2 with a 5:00 p.m. match at Division I Binghamton University.
