2008 CHESTERTOWN, MD - Host Washington College cruised to a 96-47 non-conference win over visiting Goucher College in men's swimming action this evening in Casey Swim Center. Sophomore Chris Soper (Towson, MD/Loyola Blakefield), junior Dan Wentzel (Exton, PA/Henderson), senior Eddie Raleigh (Hanover, PA/Southwestern), and freshman Matt Violette (Westbrook, ME/Westbrook) broke the pool record in the 800 freestyle relay for the Shoremen (4-3) with an exhibition time of 7:33.66. Wentzel also established a pool record in the 1650 freestyle, swimming a 17:48.07 as an exhibition. He added a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle in 53.93. Soper won the 200 freestyle in 1:57.65, while Violette won the 200 individual medley in 2:06.66. Senior Alex Thomas (Towson, MD/Calvert Hall) took first place in the 50 freestyle in 23.61, sophomore Dylan Pollock (Savannah, GA/Benedictine Military) won the 100 butterfly in 56.18, and senior Brandon Becker (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks East) finished first in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.81. As exhibition entries, Pollock (5:19.50) and Thomas (1:03.78) turned in the top times in the 500 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, respectively. Violette, Thomas, Pollock, and Soper captured the 200 medley relay in a Washington College season-best time of 1:40.71. Junior Phil Munger (Devon, PA/Conestoga) placed second in both the 50 freestyle (24.19) and the 100 butterfly (58.78). Raleigh was second in the 200 individual medley (2:14.88), sophomore Dan Beadell (Timonium, MD/Loyola Blakefield) was second in the 100 freestyle (56.19), and junior Mike Caro (Yorktown, VA/Yorktown) was second in the 100 backstroke (1:07.44). The Shoremen return to action January 26th with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home meet against Dickinson.
