3, 2007 GETTYSBURG, PA - Sophomore Chris Soper (Towson, MD/Loyola Blakefield) and senior Alex Thomas (Towson, MD/Calvert Hall) each won two individual events as the Washington College men's swim team lost its season opener to Gettysburg College, 107-96, in a Centennial Conference meet this afternoon. The Bullets clinched the victory with a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay, the final event of the meet. Soper took first place in the 50 freestyle in 22.89 and the 100 freestyle in 50.76. Thomas won the 200 individual medley in 2:04.42 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:20.49. Freshman Matt Violette (Westbrook, ME/Westbrook) won the 500 freestyle in 5:04.25 and was second in the 200 freestyle in 1:52.05. Sophomore Dylan Pollock (Savannah, GA/Benedictine Military) added a first-place finish in the 200 butterfly in 2:05.74. Senior Brandon Becker (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks East) finished third in the 200 backstroke in 2:12.09, while junior Dan Wentzel (Exton, PA/Henderson) placed third in the 1000 freestyle in 10:50.91. Violette, Thomas, Pollock, and Soper won the 400 medley relay in 3:42.06. Violette led off the relay with a 56.46 backstroke leg to become Washington's sixth-fastest swimmer ever in the 100 backstroke. Pollock, junior Phil Munger (Devon, PA/Conestoga), Wentzel, and senior Eddie Raleigh (Hanover, PA/Southwestern) were second in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:29.47. The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 6:00 p.m. non-conference home meet against Eastern Shore rival Salisbury.
