12, 2005 CHESTERTOWN, MD - The Washington College men's swim team defeated St. Mary's (MD), 140-64, on Saturday afternoon at Casey Swim Center. Sophomore Alex Thomas (Towson, MD/Calvert Hall) recorded three individual first-place finishes in the Shoremen victory. Thomas earned his first-place finishes in the 200 individual medley,100 butterfly, and 100 breaststroke, with times of 2:05.87, 57.80 and 1:02.35, respectively. Junior Colin Soper (Towson, MD/Loyola Blakefield) earned first-place finishes in the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle in 1:51.33 and 5:02.01, respectively. Sophomore Brandon Becker (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks East) earned a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle in 52.26, and a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle in 23.27. Freshman Dan Wentzel (Exton, PA/Henderson) recorded a first-place finish in the 50 freestyle in 23.20. Wentzel also placed second in the 100 backstroke in 59.66. Sophomore Eddie Raleigh (Hanover, PA/Southwestern) earned a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle and a third-place finish in the 500 freestyle, with times of 1:55.47 and 5:26.85, respectively. Freshman Phil Munger (Devon, PA/Conestoga) finished second in the 100 freestyle in 53.94 and third in the 200 individual medley in 2:12.06. Senior captain Dean Campbell (La Plata, MD/ La Plata) earned a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly in 59.32, while freshman Kevin Lonergan (Milford, DE, Milford) placed second in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 11:19.59. Junior Lars Kalp (Everett, PA/Nercersburg Academy) and senior Shane Walsh (Mitchellville, MD/Archbishop Spalding) each earned one third-place finish. Kalp placed third in the 1,000 freestyle in 11:37.00, while Walsh finished third in the 100 backtstroke in 1:03.11. Junior Michael Manen (West Orange, NJ/West Orange) earned a third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:09.99. The 200 yard freestyle relay team of Munger, Raleigh, Kalp and Campbell earned a first-place finish in 1:36.44. The 200 yard freestyle exhibition team of Soper, Wentzel, Becker and Thomas were the fastest in the race, setting a season-best time of 1:30.95. The 200 yard medley relay team of Becker, Soper, Campbell and Wentzel recorded a first-place finish in 1:44.52, while the team of Walsh, Manen, Lonergan and freshman Mike Caro (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) finished second in 1:50.75. With the victory, Washington improves its overall record to 2-1 while St. Mary's drops to 3-2 overall on the season. The Shoremen return to action on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against Centennial Conference opponent Franklin & Marshall.
