Shoremen Swim Past Sea Gulls
Soper and Thomas Post Two First-Place Finishes

CHESTERTOWN, MD - The Washington College men's swim team won its home opener over Eastern Shore rival Salisbury, 114-91, on Wednesday evening at Casey Swim Center. Junior Colin Soper (Towson, MD/Loyola Blakefield), sophomore Alex Thomas (Towson, MD/Calvert Hall), and freshman Dan Wentzel (Exton, PA/Henderson) each recorded two individual first-place finishes en route to the Shoremen victory.

Soper earned his first-place finishes in the 200 individual medley and the 100 freestyle, with times of 2:07.59 and 50.34, respectively. Thomas recorded his first-place finishes in the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.91, and in the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.13. Wentzel recorded a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle in 1:54.25 and swam a lifetime-best 5:14.69 to win the 500 freestyle.

Sophomore Brandon Becker (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks East) earned a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle in 23.10, while freshman Kevin Lonergan (Milford, DE/Milford) also earned a second-place finish in the 1,000 freestyle in 11:22.13. Sophomore Eddie Raleigh (Hanover, PA/Southwestern) earned a second-place finish in the 500 freestyle in 5:27.89.

Junior Lars Kalp (Everett, PA/Mercersburg Academy) earned a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle in 1:59.41. Junior Mike Caro (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) notched a third-place finish in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:19.77.

The 200 medley relay team of senior Dean Campbell (La Plata, MD/La Plata), Becker, Thomas, and Wentzel finished first in 1:45.33. Campbell, Kalp and Soper along with freshman Phil Munger (Devon, PA/Conestoga) placed second in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:33.75.

With the victory, Washington improves its overall record to 1-1 while Salisbury drops to 0-3 overall on the season.

The Shoremen return to action on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against non-conference foe St. Mary's (MD).
