5, 2005 GETTYSBURG, PA- The Washington College men's swim team lost its season opener to Centennial Conference rival Gettysburg College, 151-53, on Saturday afternoon. Junior Colin Soper (Towson, MD/Loyola Blakefield) recorded Washington's only victory of the afternoon in the 500 freestyle in 5:12.70. Soper also earned a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle in 1:51.76. Sophomore Alex Thomas (Towson, MD/Calvert Hall) earned second-place finishes in the 200 individual medley and the 200 breaststroke, with times of 2:07.93 and 2:21.01, respectively. Sophomore Brandon Becker (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks East) and freshman Dan Wentzel (Exton, PA/Henderson) would add a pair of individual third-place finishes to the Shoremen's effort. Becker finished the 200 backstroke in 2:16.26, while Wentzel finished the 50 freestyle in 23.45. The 400 medley relay team of Becker, Soper, Thomas and Wentzel finished second in 3:48.52. Becker, along with junior Lars Kalp (Everett, PA/Mercersburg Academy), sophomore Eddie Raleigh (Hanover, PA/Southwestern), and freshman Phil Munger (Devon, PA/Conestoga) placed second in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:37.04. The Shoremen return to action in their home opener on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. against Eastern Shore rival Salisbury.
