13, 2004 CHESTERTOWN, MD - The Washington College men's swim team won all nine contested events en route to a 133-49 Centennial Conference victory over visiting Ursinus this afternoon at Casey Swim Center. The Shoremen improved to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in conference meets with the victory. Washington's 200 medley relay team of freshman Brandon Becker (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks East), freshman Alex Thomas (Towson, MD/Calvert Hall), sophomore Peter McVaugh (Avondale, PA/McKean), and sophomore Colin Soper (Towson, MD/Loyola Blakefield) swam a pool-record time during the meet. Becker, Thomas, McVaugh, and Soper won the 200 medley relay in 1:42.58 to break the Casey Swim Center record. Soper, freshman Eddie Raleigh (Hanover, PA/Southwestern), and sophomore Trevor Carouge (Oxford, MD/Sts. Peter & Paul) each won two individual events. Soper finished first in the 400 individual medley in 4:32.05 to become the Shoremen's eighth-fastest swimmer ever in that event and won the 100 backstroke in 57.99. Raleigh swept the distance events, winning the 1000 freestyle in 11:30.54 and the 500 freestyle in 5:25.56. Carouge won the 50 freestyle in 22.88 and the 100 freestyle in 51.14. McVaugh and senior Ken Jensen (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) each won one individual event. McVaugh captured first place in the 100 butterfly in 56.92, while Jensen won the 200 freestyle in 1:56.23. The Shoremen also took second place in five individual events. Jensen was second in the 100 butterfly (57.76), Becker in the 100 freestyle (51.82), Thomas in the 400 individual medley (4:43.80), senior Conor Caporale (Laguna Niguel, CA/Dana Hills) in the 100 backstroke (1:04.93), and sophomore Lars Kalp (Everett, PA/Mercersburg Academy) in the 1000 freestyle (11:48.10). Washington entered the final two events of the meet - the 100 breaststroke and the 200 freestyle relay - as exhibitions only. Thomas turned in the fastest time in the 100 breaststroke, finishing in 4:43.80. Carouge, Raleigh, Kalp, and Jensen recorded the fastest time in the 200 freestyle relay, completing the race in 1:36.55. The Shoremen's next meet will be a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference meet one week from today at Franklin & Marshall.
