6, 2004 CHESTERTOWN, MD - The Washington College men's swim team lost its season opener to Centennial Conference rival Gettysburg College, 128-74, at Casey Swim Center this afternoon. Sophomore Trevor Carouge (Oxford, MD/Sts. Peter & Paul) and freshman Alex Thomas (Towson, MD/Calvert Hall) each won one individual event for the Shoremen. Washington also won the 400 freestyle relay. Thomas finished first in the 200 breaststroke in 2:21.83, making him Washington's sixth-fastest swimmer all-time in that event. He also placed second in the 200 individual medley in 2:08.50. Carouge won the 50 freestyle in 22.67 to become the Shoremen's eighth-fastest swimmer ever in that event. Carouge also swam a 49.94 in the third leg of the 400 freestyle relay to give the Shoremen the lead in that event. Sophomore Colin Soper (Towson, MD/Loyola Blakefield), freshman Brandon Becker (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks East), Carouge, and sophomore Peter McVaugh (Avondale, PA/McKean) won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:23.09. Soper added a pair of individual second-place finishes to the Shoremen's effort, finishing the 100 freestyle in 10:40.33 and the 500 freestyle in 5:05.64. Becker became Washington's seventh-fastest swimmer ever in the 200 backstroke by finishing in third place in 2:06.94. The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 6:00 p.m. meet at Eastern Shore rival Salisbury.
